Day 3 — Don't Crush Their Spirit
Scripture: Colossians 3:21; Ephesians 6:4
There are things we say and forget immediately that our children remember for years: a passing comment, a joke about what they love, a dismissive response. We may mean to make them realistic, but repeated criticism can teach them not to share.
Paul warns fathers not to embitter their children lest they become discouraged. He also calls parents to raise children in the training and instruction of the Lord. He doesn't eliminate correction; he calls us to consider the spirit in which we teach.
Our children need boundaries and truth. But not every preference is a mistake, not every dream needs a reality check, and not every conversation needs a lesson. Especially for teenagers discovering their identity, affection must not depend on agreement. If every conversation turns into correction, they may stop bringing us their thoughts.
I want my children to bring me their dreams, unusual ideas, and mistakes—not because I'll always agree, but because they'll always be heard.
Reflect: Has my quick criticism made my child less willing to share?
Practice: Listen fully today without interrupting or solving.
Prayer: Father, guard my words. Help me distinguish necessary correction from unnecessary criticism, and make our home a place of truth and encouragement. Amen.
