Day 5 — Raise Them Without Rushing Them
Scripture: Deuteronomy 6:6–7; Ephesians 6:4
I keep thinking about that house—the one my daughter loves, with no yard, and a dozen things I could criticize without slowing down the car.
Someday she may see it differently. She may want a backyard or another neighborhood. Or she may still love it. That's okay. The conversation was never really about real estate. It was about relationship.
Deuteronomy 6 describes teaching God's commands through ordinary life: sitting at home, walking along the road, lying down, getting up. Faith is lived in everyday moments—even in the car passing a house.
We have to teach discernment, responsibility, and consequences. But not every lesson must happen today. The child who needs a hand to hold becomes the teen who needs us to listen without taking control, and eventually an adult who needs love even when decisions are their own.
I want my children to remember that I taught them truth, and that I delighted in who they were. That their excitement was safe with me. Maybe next time we pass that house, I'll ask my daughter what she'd do with the inside. And maybe I'll just listen.
Reflect: What will my children remember about how I responded to their dreams and mistakes?
Practice: Tell your child something you appreciate about who they are today, not what they've achieved.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me raise my children with wisdom without rushing their growth. Teach me to correct gently, listen patiently, and love humbly. May they see something of Your heart in me. In Jesus' name, amen.
