Day 2 — You Can Set It Down

The burden we keep picking up

Scripture: Psalm 55:22; Matthew 11:28–30

Key truth: You can care deeply and still allow yourself to rest.

We often carry a concern long after we have done everything we can do about it.

The email has been sent. The appointment is scheduled. The conversation has happened. Still, we pick the matter up again, turn it over, and imagine another possible outcome.

Sometimes worry feels like an act of love. If we stop thinking about the person or the problem, it can feel as though we have stopped caring.

But love has other ways to remain faithful. We can listen, offer help, tell the truth, and keep our commitments. We can also admit that another person’s choices and tomorrow’s circumstances are beyond our control.

Psalm 55 invites us to entrust our burdens to God. Jesus welcomes weary people to learn from Him and find rest. Both passages give us somewhere to bring the weight we are carrying.

This is especially difficult when the burden involves someone we love. We want the ability to keep our children safe, make the right opportunity appear, or spare someone a painful lesson. The limits of our influence can feel unbearable.

Prayer allows us to acknowledge those limits without withdrawing our love.

“Lord, show me how to care for this person today. Help me trust You with what I cannot choose for them.”

We may need to pray that again this afternoon. Returning with the same concern is still a way of turning toward God.

For today, consider the difference between an action you can take and an outcome you cannot guarantee. Give your attention to the action. Bring the outcome to God.

You can care deeply and still allow yourself to rest.

Reflect: Which concern do I keep revisiting after I have taken the available action? What is mine to do today, and what outcome must I entrust to God?

Quiet practice: Write two sentences: “Today I can…” and “God, I entrust to You…” Complete each with one specific thing. Follow through on the action you identified.

Prayer: Jesus, I bring You the weight I keep picking up. Teach me to care wisely and act faithfully. Help me recognize my limits and trust Your care beyond them. Give rest to my tired heart. Amen.
