The Words That Stayed
Five Days of Learning to Walk by Faith

Series introduction
When I was growing up, there were a handful of albums I listened to nonstop. Petra’s Not of This World, Michael W. Smith’s The Michael W. Smith Project, Russ Taff’s Medals, and Amy Grant’s Unguarded were part of the soundtrack of my childhood.
I loved the music. I wanted to hear those songs again and again.
Now, at 52, I’m listening to Petra with a different appreciation. More than forty years have passed, and I’m realizing how much those songs gave me. Through that music, God’s Word was finding a place in my heart.
Petra sang about trusting Christ, standing firm, living to please God, and the promise of resurrection. They put biblical truth into songs I wanted to keep playing. Some of those truths stayed with me long before I understood their depth.
One song that stands out now is “Not by Sight.” I could learn the words as a boy. Understanding what it means to live them has taken much longer.
There is a difference between singing about faith and having to trust God when you cannot see what comes next. As life gives those words weight, I find myself grateful for the foundation laid so many years ago. Those songs still make me want to open my Bible and understand more.
This week, we will follow that invitation. We will consider the Word God plants in us, the faith that carries us through uncertainty, the belonging that shapes our lives, the approval we pursue, and the hope Christ gives us beyond death.
You do not have to know the album to walk with us. Bring your Bible, your questions, and a willingness to take the next step.
Day 1: The Words That Stayed
Read: Psalm 119:9–16; Colossians 3:16
Focus: Psalm 119:11 describes treasuring God’s Word within us so that it shapes the way we live.
Key truth: Remembering Scripture is meant to affect our choices, our desires, and our treatment of other people.
Listening connection: Revisit “Not by Sight,” or another song that first helped you learn Scripture.

Devotion
When I listen to Petra today, I hear familiar music. But I also recognize biblical truths that were taking root when I was young.
At the time, I was enjoying an album. I was not thinking about what those songs might mean to me decades later. Looking back, I can see how music helped me remember things about God that I would spend years learning to understand.
Colossians 3:16 connects the message of Christ with teaching, wisdom, gratitude, and singing. Music can give truth a place in our memory. A melody returns, and words we have not consciously thought about in years return with it.
Psalm 119 takes us a step further. The psalmist treasures God’s Word because he wants to live faithfully before God. Remembering Scripture is meant to affect our choices, our desires, and our treatment of other people.
That challenges me. I can appreciate the biblical depth of an old song and still need to ask whether I am allowing that truth to shape my life today. Familiarity is a beginning. God invites me to listen again, open the Bible, and respond.
Maybe your early foundation came through a parent, a Sunday school teacher, a hymn, or someone who prayed with you. Maybe you are only beginning to build that foundation now. Wherever you are starting, there is room for God’s Word to become more deeply at home in you.
Choose one passage. Read it slowly. Carry it into the ordinary parts of the day. Return to it tomorrow. We cannot predict every moment when we will need the truth we are learning, but we can make room for it now.
Reflection
What Scripture has stayed with you over the years? What would change if you acted on it today?
Practice the path
Read Psalm 119:11 in your Bible and write it down. Keep it somewhere you will see it, and ask God to help you practice what you remember.
Prayer
Father, thank You for the people and songs that helped me hear Your Word. Help me receive it with fresh attention. Let what I remember become part of how I live. Give me a growing desire to know You through Scripture. Amen.
